Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of the unusual rock formations and birds in the area. Unfortunately it rained almost the entire time we were here so I have very few pictures of the area. This is Southeast Brook Falls--a short but beautiful hike we were able to take when the heavy downfall became a mist. This park is in the Northwestern part of the island.

This is the entrance into Western Brook Pond. It is a fjord carved out by glaciers over 9,000 years ago. Eight thousand years ago a bog started to grow, slowing closing in the fjord so it was not fed by the ocean any longer. Now it is called a pond and is entirely fresh water fed by the Western Brook river.

The pond is 10 miles long and 540 feet deep. This picture is of the end.

Hidden Blue Falls

The walls of the pond are 2200 feet high and granite--certainly a commanding sight.

More granite walls.

This waterfall is called pissing mare falls. It is called that because of the mist coming off the falls as it drops over the granite wall.
