L'anse Aux Meadows is a National Historic Site of Canada and is the site where Leif Erickson landed in the year 1000(or so), which predates Christopher Columbus as the first European to reach North America. He called this area Vinland. Newfoundland was first settled 9,000 years ago by the Maritime Archaic Indians(4500-3200BC) and then by the Paleo- Eskimos(2700-1100BC). This picture is of some of the mounds that were once Viking dwellings.

This is a recreation of one of the Viking dwellings on site. The frame was made of wood and then covered by bog peat which they collected in the area. They used this camp off and on for about 10 years and then abandoned it. They came for the wood to take back to Greenland to build their dwellings.

This is the ocean beach where Leif Erickson allegedly landed.
